Reading and Understanding your Body
I believe that our bodies are mechanisms of communication.
Our bodies are vessels that carry us from one time and place into the next. Ideally, our bodies should move as freely and smoothly as you see animals doing – they are completely embodied and resting in the here and now.
However, our unique human consciousness and intelligence sometimes disrupts this flow. Homo Sapiens have so many skills and roles: planners, activists, artists, parents, philosophers. These are beautiful characteristics but they can sometimes work against us. Maybe we tend to overthink or get stuck in a cycle of a particular negative emotion such as anger, grief or anxiety. This is when trauma (either physical or emotional) is held in the body and unable to ‘shift.’ This can make our bodies unpleasant places to be and so we feel unwell mentally and emotionally and so a vicious cycle ensues.
There is no easy answer to all of this; it is part of being human. However, there are things that we can do to try to understand what is happening inside of ourselves. We can learn how to befriend ourselves and our bodies and seek out what we enjoy and find fulfilling – this will help us to heal, feel more attached to the present and shift blocked emotions inside of us.
Massage, as we have seen from its long history, has been highly valued as beneficial to well-being and peaceful states. In my opinion, it works on many different levels: firstly, the obvious manipulation of muscle will ease stress and tension; but also other factors play a part too, such as feeling heard and seen by your massage therapist, feeling cared for, and allowing your body to relax in such a way that it begins to heal more effectively.
I treat every session with the respect and care that it deserves; in that it is an important part of my client’s well-being. Each session is a chance to broaden the scope for healing and allow your body to connect to its own intelligence and communicate what it needs.
